Katherine & Amaya’s Story

My name is Amaya D. I was diagnosed with Lupus In 2006 at age 13. After 4 years of trying different medications, going to see multiple specialists, and eventually receiving infusions of a biologic medication, I went into remission in 2010. I am happy to report that so far, I have stayed in remission.

I never could have made it as far as I did through this journey without the support of my parents, especially my mom. She was my cheerleader, my advocate, my confidant, and my inspiration. I feel so lucky to have had her unwavering support through one of the most difficult stages of my life.

Unfortunately, in 2023, I lost both of my parents in a plane crash. Moving through this life without them has been so, so hard, but they are still ingrained in everything I do. They taught me to appreciate the small moments in life, and to keep fighting through the hard times. They gave me strength when I felt that I had none. Their memories continue to stay with me as a source of strength, encouragement, and inspiration. Thank you, Mom and Dad, for everything. I love you both so much.
